'Towers of Light' Shine From Pentagon in Tribute to 9/11 Victims
A ‘Towers of Light’ tribute lit up the night sky over the Pentagon on September 9 to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks in commemoration of the 20th anniversary.
This video, taken by journalist Saqib Ul Islam, shows the beams of light shine amid the Washington, DC, skyline.
The commemorative light display, organized by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, was illuminated on the evening of September 9 and will be lit every night at the Pentagon until the morning hours of September 12, according to the foundation’s website.
The group also sponsors a similar tribute at the Flight 93 memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
“I hope that everyone who sees these lights, which are visible for dozens of miles, will pause to remember what happened on 9/11," said Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “For those Americans who are too young to remember, I hope they see this tribute and ask questions so they can learn about what happened, and the heroes who lost their lives that day.”
The foundation is named for the actions of Stephen Gerard Siller, who drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel on September 11, 2001, to find it had already been closed for security purposes. According to the foundation, Siller “strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers,” where he died. Credit: Saqib Ul Islam via Storyful
