Curious Penguin Checks Out New Solar Farm in Antarctica

An inquisitive penguin was spotted sizing up new solar panels installed at the Casey research station in Antarctica.

All 105 panels were activated on March 19, becoming Australia’s first solar farm in Antarctica, according to a statement from the Australian Antarctic Division. However, in this video filmed by the division in February, it’s the lonely penguin that steals the spotlight.

The curious bird can be seen looking the panels up and down before tiring of his exploration and moseying off into the distance.

The solar farm was built in collaboration between the Australian Antarctic Division and Masdar, an Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, to test renewable energy efficiency in cold environments. The panels were expected to supply 10 per cent of the station’s energy for the year.

“This project will help to build expertise in, and the performance of, solar systems in cold and remote environments,” a spokesperson for the project said in a statement. Credit: Australian Antarctic Division via Storyful
