Dozens of Cows Run Loose Through Los Angeles Area After Escaping Slaughterhouse

Dozens of cows ran through a California neighborhood on June 22 after escaping a slaughterhouse in Pico Rivera, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department warned of police activity in the area as they removed the cattle, joking on Twitter, “STEER CLEAR for a few more minutes please. We are in the process of mooo-ving the cows!”

Daisy Laureano recorded this footage and originally posted it to Facebook. She told Storyful she lives in Pico Rivera near the slaughterhouse, and said she was in shock at the sight and the number of cows coming down the street.

“My daughter handed me the phone and said, ‘Mom, record this,’ so I did,” Laureano said. “I was scared for the cows and for the people around.”

One person was injured and taken to the hospital, deputies told local news outlets.

“I shot this video, then parked my car in my driveway. This happened a skip and jump away,” Laureano said. “Helicopters and police were around the neighborhood until almost midnight.”

Officials told local news outlets 40 cows escaped, 38 have been captured, one was fatally shot, and one had not yet been located at the time of writing. Credit: Daisy Laureano via Storyful
