Man Crafts Wooden Exercise Equipment After COVID-19 Shuts Down His Gym

With his gym forced to shut due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ohio man Zachary Skidmore came up with a novel way to keep fit at home — constructing an outdoor gym made entirely of timber.

In a video posted to posted to Facebook on April 4, Skidmore can be seen pumping logs in his “lumber-jacked gym”.

“When I heard my gym was going to close. I knew I had to come up with a way to continue working out,” he told Storyful.

Skidmore said he was first considering various bodyweight exercises, but he came up with the wooden gym idea after seeing a fallen tree on his family’s property in Jackson, Ohio.

“After I made the bench I made some dumbells for a more real-gym feel,” Skidmore told Storyful. “And at that point I realized, I had nothing but time due to work being postponed from COVID-19. So why not continue?”

According to Skidmore, it took him around 60 hours over two weeks to design and complete the gym setup, which includes a rowing machine.

“Some pieces of equipment I drew out before the sun came up to get an idea, but for the most part I was just making it up as I went along,” he said. “Between the engineering and planning of how to execute parts, I was going as fast as I could because I wanted to get back to my normal workout routine.” Credit: Zachary Skidmore via Storyful
